Photograph of William Hastie and clerk. Hastie, a graduate of Washington D.C.’s Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School (1921), earned his Doctor of Juridicial Science from the Harvard University Law School, and worked with Charles Hamilton Houston’s law firm of Houston and Houston, eventually collaborating with Houston and Thurgood Marshall building cases leading to the historic 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision. He served as an advisor to the Roosevelt administration and in 1937 became the first African American federal judge, serving in the Virgin Islands. From 1946-1949 he would become the first African American governor of any United States territory. He became Dean and Professor of Law at Howard University’s School of Law, and Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals until his retirement in 1968. He died in Norristown, Pennsylvania.
