Description

Original caption on front: Magic City Council no. 221 A-U-K and D of A. Juvenile Dept. Most Excellent Queen Mrs. Annie Shoecraft. May 29th 1926, Muncie, Ind. Transcription from back of photo: This photograph was taken on Saturday May 29, 1926. It was the weekend before Memorial Day. Bands in Muncie's black community used to "TURNOUT" on Mothers Day and march down Hackley Street to Jackson Street, turn East and march to Bethel and Calvary churches on Jackson. The Lodge (Masonic) was located at Willard and Hackley Streets. Apparently this affair had something to do with celebrating Memorial Day in 1926. In 1926 the Lodge Halls were located at 110 1/2 N. Walnut Street. It is believed this photo was shot in the 900 block of East Jackson Street because of the curb and sidewalk in the photo. The photograph was given to Hurley Goodall by Mr. Mel Davis prior to his death. People in the photograph have not been identified. By: Hurley C. Goodall - Visiting Scholar Middletown Center Ball State University December 30, 1996.This compound object replaces the single object black and white xerox copy in the collection. The single object was deleted and the description that went along with the item was as follows: Original caption: A-U-K of A. Juvenile Dept. most Excellent Queen Mrs. Annie Shoecraft.; It is believed the photograph was taken in the 1400 block of E. 8th St. in Industry.
