Davenport, Sophia
Description
Holograph, signed.Title devised by cataloger.Sophia Davenport writes to Miss Weston thanking her her for her letters and sending books. She says she has read part of George Thompson's debate with [Robert J.] Breckenridge and Angelina Grimke's appeal. She regrets that the Liberator cannot be sent to her "for it would be foolish of me to take it, if it would be dangerous to myself and friends, merely for my own personal good, without being of service to the cause." She is delighted that Mr. Luther Lincoln is so "zealous in the cause." She discusses with a friend the possibility that the addressee might come to St. Louis and open a school. She tells of a minister named Charles Farley. Mr. Eliot, the founder of the local anti-slavery society, is going to New Orleans and Mobile. She reports briefly on the church work in Alton and Peoria, Illinois.
