Photographic portrait of Mrs. Betty Jenkins Phillips, superintendent of Provident Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Talladega College in Alabama, her RN from Howard University, and her Masters of Science in Hospital Administration from the University of Chicago. Mrs. Phillips became the night supervisor at Provident Hospital in 1927, superintendent of nurses and director of nursing in 1928, and superintendent of the hospital in 1935. Her title was changed to hospital administrator in 1940, and on September 15, 1940, she was presented a certificate of membership at the American College of Hospital Administrators' seventh annual convention in Boston, Massachusetts, becoming the only woman superintendent in the American College of Hospital Administrators. (Editor's note: Mrs. Betty Jenkins Phillips was born in Talladega, Alabama on June 22, 1904 and died in Newark, New Jersey on February 4, 2000.)
