Holograph, signed.Title devised by cataloger.Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) manuscript composed in black ink on white paper with an embossed logo in the head- spine corner of the first and third pages, showing an oval containing the words, "Holyoke & Co.". Above the salutation, the number "111" is written in pencil and there are three vertical lines, drawn in ink, over the last paragraph of the letter.Gerrit Smith writes to William Lloyd Garrison saying he has read with "satisfaction your 'Drafting - the hour of Trial" (an article in the Liberator) and calls it "a beautiful specimen". Smith discusses Garrison's comparison of "Non-Resistants" and Quakers when faced with a military draft and tells Garrison he "look[s] with interest for your continuation next week."
