Street view of St. Benedict the Moor Institute and St. Anthony Hospital, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Notes by Archivist: In 1908, Chicago layman, C. Lincoln Valle founded St. Benedict the Moor Mission, which later under Capuchins administration, grew with a parish church (built 1923), Institute (coeducational parochial boarding school, established 1913), and St. Anthony Hospital (built 1931; closed 1988; listed in state registry of historic places, 2017). St. Benedict is the last surviving Milwaukee church built for an African American congregation and St. Anthony was a pioneer in the racial integration of health care in Milwaukee.Caption on image: ST.
