Bill of Sale between William Townsend and Audrey Farley for a Slave, c1700

View
@ East Hampton Library

Townsend, William

Description

Contract for purchase of 14 year old slave "Nicholas," with understanding said Nicholas to be manumitted, or freed, upon his 21st birthday; however, if before that time said Nicholas is "absent" from his duties, he is to repay Townsend in double the amount of time he was absent. Catalog card states slave was owned by William Townsend's sister Phebe, whose name is on reverse side of contract (addressed Albany, honored by Mr. Fleet); possible that Phebe was married to stated owner Audrey Farley.
