Holograph, signed.Title devised by cataloger.On verso, the delivery address is "Rev. A A Phelps, New York." It was postmarked on June 16 in Boston.In this letter to Amos A. Phelps, Marshall Scudder says he discussed the proposed union of the West India Mission and the Union Missionary Society with Lewis Tappan. He says he agrees with Tappan that it is best to wait to act upon the merger until a secretary, fully devoted to the matter, can be employeed. He also talks about a few people, including Mr. Kirk, who abandoned the plan to go to Palestine, Tracy, who is working for the Colonization Society in Massachusetts, and Mr. Renshaw, who he hopes Phelps would help in procuring funds for the “mission.”
