Description

These SNCC press releases from January-August 1964 emphasize Mississippi's obstacles to voting by African Americans, discrimination against them in public places throughout the South, raids on SNCC offices and confiscation of papers there by Selma, Alabama, lawmen, newly-passed Mississippi laws designed to thwart civil rights efforts, church burnings, bombings of private homes, and numerous other incidents of violence and intimidation. Several document comedian Dick Gregory's activism in the civil rights movement, and the successful attempt to discourage celebrities from performing for segregated audiences in Jackson, Mississippi. The press releases are especially valuable for filling out stories only hinted at in the WATS line reports. There are a couple of photos in the press releases. Included are a summary of Freedom Summer accomplishments and an announcement of the start of "The Mississippi Freedom Drive," a typewritten analysis of the November 4, 1964, Freedom Vote in Mississip
