...in the Atkinson Cemetery is a headstone that simply says, 'To the remains of Jack, the Black Man of John McCord, age 45 y.' McCord had been raised in North Carolina and had lived for many years in Tennessee, where he apparently acquired Jack as a slave. When the McCords moved to Illinois in the 1830s, Jack came with them.
