John Hamilton

John Hamilton

Description

John Hamilton was apart of a family of 7 that moved from North Carolina to Brooklyn when he was child. His family lived in a 7-room apartment in Park Slope. He describes his neighborhood as multicultural and welcoming, but says it is no longer as friendly and family oriented. His father owned a landscaping business and was a super of a 6-story building. His mother was a homemaker and worked in commercial laundry. He describes his parents as hard workers that encouraged and supported education. Growing up Hamilton’s chores included garbage, sweeping, and washing dishes. Although Hamilton didn’t get an allowance, he enjoyed his chores. Hamilton remembers growing up with no microwaves, crockpots, toaster ovens, or telephones. He talks about cooking on the stove and communicating verbally and by letters. He got his first telephone around junior high school. He thinks children today are more advanced because of technology. Hamilton talks about mistakes he’s made that made his path more difficult and trying to help others not make the same mistakes.
