Image of Daisy Bates (1914-1999), seated 2nd from left, who co-founded the Arkansas State Press weekly newspaper. In 1952, she was elected President of the Arkansas branch of the NAACP. She also served as an advisor to the Little Rock Nine during their successful campaign at desegregating Little Rock Central High School, providing her home as an ad-hoc headquarters for “Little Rock Nine” strategic planning and refuge. Years later she served in the administration of United States President Lyndon B. Johnson as part of his anti-poverty initiative.
