In the head- spine corner, a small checkmark is drawn in pencil, while above the salutation, the number "111" is also written in pencil.Mary A. Shadd Cary writes to William Lloyd Garrison asking him to include the "accompanying minutes" (not included) in the Liberator. Cary states that while "purporting to be from a single town, they are known to embody the sentiments of nine-tenths of the colored people of this country." She then discusses the issues of fugitives begging for clothes and money and the Refugees' Home Society in Windsor. She tells Garrison that "the great difficulty is to get the public ear" and asks for his help and the help of the Liberator's readers in assisting the fugitive slaves.
