Description
Photograph of the Charles Street Bridge at Union Station (not pictured) in Baltimore, Maryland. This bridge was built in 1886, eventually replaced by a new bridge in 1958, then reconstructed in 2003. Union Station was razed in 1910, rebuilt and reopened in 1911, and renamed Pennsylvania Station in 1928. In the foreground are two few African American men walking across the bridge toward the camera. Behind them on the left is a horse-drawn wagon moving across the bridge away from the men. Behind them on the right is African American woman standing on the bridge, probably looking at the train tracks below. The surface of the bridge is made of wooden planks, while the surface of the Charles Street consists of cobblestones.
