Description
Duke Ellington at Nixon's Grand Theatre (songtress-Ivy Anderson). Named Duke for his sophisticated image and tidy appearance, Ellington was tutored in music composition by Dunbar High School’s Lee Grant. In 1917, as a pianist, he formed the group “The Duke’s Serenaders” and they played at venues across Washington D.C. and Virginia. In 1927 Ellington began to play at Harlem New York’s Cotton Club.
