View of Atlanta Vice Mayor Maynard Jackson speaking with Cal Carter, who became an administrative assistant and chief executive officer for Jackson when he became mayor, in the City Council Chambers of Atlanta City Hall in Atlanta, Georgia.Maynard Jackson was elected as the first African American mayor of Atlanta, Georgia in 1974. He served three terms, two from 1974-1982 and another from 1990-1994. During his time in office he helped to remodel Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport, which was renamed as Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport after his death in 2003.
