Thomas Gainsborough

Description

Ignatius Sancho (1729-1780). Finished proof of Thomas Gainsborough's portrait painted in Bath in 1768. At bottom of photo: Published according to act of Parliment, Mr. Nichols, Red Lion Passage, Fleet Street. Sancho was butler to the powerful Montagu family, before retiring to run a grocery in Westminster, England. He was the first African to vote in a British election, composed music, acted and was known to entertain some of the greatest literary and artistic figures of London during the mid to late 1700s.
