Stein, Luke

Description

Letter from Luke Stein, owner and manager of the Palace Theatre in Valdosta, Georgia, to his brother Ben Stein, owner and manager of the Douglass Theatre, probably dated 1927, regarding theater business. Luke explains that Bessie Smith was supposed to wire him Monday and that he wants her to perform the week of his tent show, because he expects low profits otherwise. He asks Ben to get in touch with Smith if he knows where she is. Luke remarks that if he cannot play Smith on percentage he does not want her to come in. He reports that the Ritz Theatre opened successfully, but that business has slowed. Luke asks Ben to let him know when he has a film concern before he writes. He concludes with travel plans including trips to Jacksonville, Florida, Macon, Georgia, and Atlanta, Georgia. Luke remarks that he is closing the letter because the show is out and he is tired.Digital image and encoded transcription of an original manuscript, scanned, transcribed and encoded by the Digital Library of Georgia in 2005, as part of Georgia HomePLACE.
