View of Jesse Hill, Jr. speaking at a press conference to announce him being named president and CEO of the Atlanta Life Insurance Company, with his wife Azira Hill, in Atlanta, Georgia.From 1973 to 1992, Jesse Hill, Jr. (1927- ) served as president and CEO of the Atlanta Life Insurance Company, which became the largest black-owned insurance company in the country under his tenure. In 1973, he became the first African American appointed to the University System of Georgia Board of Regents. In 1977, he became president of the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, making him the first African American to head a major metropolitan chamber of commerce in the United States. Hill also founded the African American newspaper, The Atlanta Inquirer.
