He assures her that ''it is not in me to love a dollar'' and refers to ''The Widow Bedott'' stories by Frances M. Whitcher. He writes about being more practical than idealistic when it comes to duty. He tells her of a sermon he heard and that Charly Harper just went home on a 25-day furlough. 1863.
