From 1955 to 1977, he served as the pastor of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia, which moved to its current location in the Old Fourth Ward under his tenure. He was also a member of Martin Luther King Jr.'s inner circle and was the director of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference's (SCLC) Operation Breadbasket, a program that pushed businesses in African American neighborhoods to employ blacks and provide equal opportunity for advancement.
