Description

Photograph taken looking south at the 200 block South Caroline Street from its intersection with East Pratt Street in Baltimore, Maryland. Many African Americans are walking along the sidewalks or sitting in chairs or on the front steps of the houses. One man is crossing the street, walking toward the corner grocery store. To the right on the exterior wall or the store is a painted advertisement for Baltimore American beer. A few doors down the block is a business called the Rank & File Lunch Room. Farther down the block, sitting along the curb, are a two handcarts and a pony-drawn cart used in the salvage of paper and other materials. Various styles of two- and three-story brick row houses line this street. Vehicles are both parked on and moving along the street. Tracks are embedded in the cobblestone roadway, although those on Caroline appear to be unused, since they are paved over at the intersection with Pratt. Electric lines for streetcars are suspended above the street.
