Untitled portrait print and linocut block by Elizabeth Catlett (1915-2012) prepared as a demonstration piece for a Howard University class in the 1960s or 1970s.Catlett was born in Washington, D.C. She moved to Mexico City in the late 1940s and worked with the printmaking collective Taller de Grafica Popular, which was interested to prepare art to promote social causes. Her art in printmaking and sculpture focused on the human figure, particularly that of African Americans and Mexicans.Gift of Lila Asher.Currently not on view
