"Jazz. -- The four-letter word for musical improvisation conjures up images of finger-snapping beatniks, long-haired guitarists, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Al Jarreau, Al Hirt. -- To local club owners, the word conjures up something else: no profit. -- David Broyles, president of the restaurant division of Overton Square Inc., selects acts for the Bombay Bicycle Club. -- At Bombay, he said, 'As many as six or seven nights a week we tried to have live jazz. It almost put us out of business. -- '(Jazz) doesn't draw enough people to support it. It's not that jazz supporters eat or drink less than anybody else,' he said. 'There are not enough of them out there who appreciate the music, who would make a special effort to see it.' -- Put another way, jazz and Memphis don't mix well..."
