Description

Effie L. Power became the first children's librarian at the Cleveland Public Library in 1898. From 1920-1937 she was supervisor of work with children. She was the author of Library Service for Children (1929), Bag O' Tales (1934), as well as pamphlets, articles, and booklists for children. She was a friend and mentor to Langston Hughes during his high school years at Cleveland's Central High School. In the 1930s she encouraged him to write something for children and he created The Dream Keeper, a book of poetry.
