Description
In exchange for managing the plantation and slaves, Collins will receive a horse to ride about the property; housing, provisions, and a servant for his family; and $500 per year. The contract ends with the stipulation that "if he drinks any spirits in the time he is not to receive any wages." Preceding the agreement are twenty "Rules for the Overseer or Manager," which give instructions about proper conduct of the overseer and slaves; humane treatment of the slaves and livestock; maintenance of the land and living quarters; record keeping; and accountability for time, equipment, and produce.
