Description

Bill of sale dated June 30, 1858 for property including a Negro slave named Tom, his wife Sophia, and their children Billy, Betty, Lucy, and Emily sold by William B. Willis to Carver Willis, trustee of Fanny B. Willis, all of Howard County (Maryland), to repay a debt of $3000. The sale is made in consideration of the sum of $5 paid by Carver Willis. Witnessed by Isc. (Isaac) Ridgely on August 23 and recorded by Howard County clerk W. W. Watkins on August 24, the document identifies, as transferred from William B. Willis to Carver Willis, trustee of Fanny B. Willis, the following Negro slaves: Tom age 42 years, Sophia age 35 years, Billy age 13 years, Betty age 11 years, Lucy age 9 years, and Emily age 7 years. Although unexplained, the document is also witnessed by Galveston County (Texas) judge Thomas M. Jack, who is certified as judge by Galveston County clerk Oscar Farish, both taking place on July 21, 1858.
