Description

View of Fountain Hall at Morris Brown College in Atlanta, Georgia.Morris Brown College was established in 1881 in Atlanta, Georgia, by former slaves who were associated with the African Methodist Episcopal Church. When it opened its doors in 1885 at the corner of Boulevard and Houston Street (now John Wesley Dobbs Avenue), it was the first educational institution in Georgia solely under the patronage of African Americans. The four-year, private, coeducational, liberal arts college later relocated to the Vine City community west of downtown Atlanta. The school lost its accreditation in 2002 after a financial mismanagement scandal.
