Many of the documents in these folders are original brochures from the Mississippi White Citizen's Council, making the case for maintaining segregation, especially in the public schools. Though they pre-date Freedom Summer, the brochures express views that were still operative during 1964 and, since they're "from the horse's mouth," give an excellent depiction of the ideological resistance to the civil rights movement. The grouping includes a 1959 public letter from Carleton Putnam to the U.S. Attorney General on the Supreme Court's Brown v. Board of Education decision; a report on what happened to Washington, D.C. schools when they were integrated; a fund-raising appeal called "What is the [White] Citizens' Council Doing?"; "The Midwest Hears the South's Story"; a document put out by League of Women Voters of Georgia called "Do You Know the Law about Schools?" a reprint of a 1907 Saturday Evening Post article entitled, "The Vardaman Idea: How the Governor of Mississippi Would Solve th
