Image of Mahalia Jackson with Shirley Graham DuBois. Mahalia Jackson is considered the "Queen of Gospel". She became the most popular gospel singer of her time betwen the late 1940s and the early 1970s. In addition to her groundbreaking work in mainstreaming Black gospel, Jackson was also extremely active in the Civil Rights movement. She performed at both the March on Washington in 1963 and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s funeral. Shirley Graham DuBois was an international human rights activist and scholar. She was also the widow of W.E.B. DuBois.
