Description
Steven Isoardi discusses the book, “Central Avenue Sounds: Jazz in Los Angeles.” Isoardi says the book covers the period ranging from the 1920s to the 1950s. He describes Central Avenue as the “Los Angeles Harlem” and talks about jazz musicians Marshall Royal, Sonny Criss, Fletcher Smith, Lee Young, and Gerald Wilson. Isoardi goes on to discuss the attitudes of African Americans in Los Angeles before World War II, Samuel Brown and high school music programs, and silent film background music.
