Bantam, Connecticut. Here are three newcomers to Bantam, in the Warren McArthur upholstery shop. Closest to the camera is Demetress Welch, who came with the plant from Rome, New York, in 1937. In 1940 she married Ray Welch, of Waterbury, who is now working in a sub-assembly shop at the plant. Behind her is Irene Stewart, who came to the plant from Buffalo in June 1941, along with her husband of five years, Malcolm Stewart. Malcolm is a native of London, England, and once owned his own furniture plant in Pittsburgh. The Stewarts moved into a four-room unit of the defense homes project in January, leaving a furnished room in a Bantam farmhouse. Third worker is Alice Langevin, who came to the plant in April, 1941, from Plainfield, Connecticut. She lives in Bantam, in a five-room house which she shares with her brother and sister-in-law and two nephews--all of whom came to Bantam since April, 1941, to work for Warren McArthur Bantam, Connecticut. Irene Stewart learned upholstery in Buffalo, New York, under her husband, who supervised an upholstery shop there. He is now working at the Warren McArthur plant just a few yards away from his wife. Clayton's three-man foundry at Daytona Beach, Florida. It is turning out precision parts for experimental bombers. It is also equipped for two-way communication with a central office Civilian defense. These civilian defense workers, air raid wardens equipped with helmets and gas masks, are directing civilians to shelters. So far this has been only practice here in America, but it's serious business elsewhere in the world. American ingenuity is the keenest tool in the kit of the machinists turning out war weapons in Florida's pools. This is the way J.L. Clayton, Daytona Beach fireman, figured out and built a blast furnace hot enough to melt brass and aluminum. He hooked up a fuel oil barrel to the old foundry pump shown at right. The pump blasts the oil and compressed air down the pipeline into the crucible. Four such teams travel in the ambulance, set up a station and work out from it. Motor torpedo boats (wooden). A Negro carpenter at a Southern shipyard runs a heavy plank through a power saw. He works on the building of seventy-eight-foot wooden torpedo boats which are produced in great numbers at this yard. The hulls of these speedy motor-driven boats are built indoors, of prefabricated parts and sections, and are then moved to neaby water for launching and fitting. Higgins Industries De Land pool.
