Description

Holograph, signed.Title devised by cataloger. On verso, the letter is addressed to "Richard Webb Dublin for W.L. Garrison" and it is postmarked with a red square stamp reading, "3M JY31 40."William Smeal writes to William Lloyd Garrison sending him the "printed Receipts for the passage moeny of thyself & our friend [Nathaniel Peabody] Rogers" adding that he hopes they "have no extra trouble in the matter." Smeal states that he left John Murray and Charles Lenox Remond at Bowling and he "learn'd this morning that E[lon] Galusha and C[yrus] P[itt] Grosvenor arrived in the [Firth of] Clyde soon after we parted!" He reports that Galusha and Grosvenor, along with Nathaniel Colver and James Gillespie Birney, met John Scoble and they all went to the Birmingham Anti-Slavery Society Anniversary meeting. Smeal also says that James and Lucretia Mott must be near Glasgow as "the letters pour in for them." William Knibb will not be able to lecture, Smeal says, remarking that this is "a great pity, we could have made his presence of essential service to our Cause at this juncture." He then promises to send the details of an anti-slavery meeting to be held in a few days when he has them. In the postscript, Smeal asks Garrison to "remember me kindly to the Webbs, Allens &c."
