Description
Records collected by the Mississippi Sovereignty Commission on civil rights work in Canton, Madison County, Mississippi in 1964 and 1965. The file contains reports of Sovereignty Commission investigations in the area, including lists of African Americans who registered to vote; memorandums with information about merchant association meetings discussing the African American boycott of local businesses; articles about projects in the county; lists of those arrested with address, age, and race information; and a petition with over two hundred signatures supporting the 1964 Civil Rights Act.The Civil Rights Digital Library received support from a National Leadership Grant for Libraries awarded to the University of Georgia by the Institute of Museum and Library Services for the aggregation and enhancement of partner metadata.
