Description
Dated to the 1930s, this photograph shows Alfred Murphy, an ex-slave who is learning to read and write in a literary class conducted by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in Columbus, Ohio. He is 105 years old. He was a slave for 33 years and spent two years in the Confederate Army, throwing up breastwork. He was in Richmond when General Lee surrendered.
