Oral history; interview with Dr. Lois Kilgore, April 20, 2012, Mitchell Memorial Library, Mississippi State University. Dr. Kilgore, the first MSU Professor Emerita of Home Economics, was born in 1922 in Oktibbeha County, Mississippi. Kilgore first began her career at Mississippi State as a Chemist in the Petroleum Products Laboratory from 1953 to 1956. After receiving her Master's degree in Chemistry, she moved to Lloyd-Ricks and became an Assistant Home Economist from 1956 to 1968. After earning her PhD, she was promoted to Professor of Home Economics in 1969. Kilgore loved teaching and also did many research studies, including studies in nutrition. She served as Department Head from 1969 to 1971, but resumed the role of professor because of her love of research. She wrote many articles and publications during her career. She retired from MSU in 1983 and died February 28, 2013. In this interview, she discusses the beginnings and the history of the Home Economics Department at Mississippi State, the history of the Lloyd-Ricks Building and its early faculty members, Richard Holmes' MSU studies, and the first African-American and international students to join the Home Economics Department.
