Johnson, Giles

Description

Reverend Giles Junius Johnson was born in Virginia on April 14, 1904. His father was a former slave and his mother was a lay preacher. He first came to Lima for the ministry, then became pastor of Friendship Baptist Church in Toledo in the 1940s. In this interview, Rev. Johnson discusses his childhood days as a sharecropper and his college education, both of which often came under threat from the Ku Klux Klan. He also discusses the formation and implementation of the Board of Community Relations, which he served on for thirty years. Many of Johnson's recollections of Toledo's landmark battles for Civil Rights are also included. Reverend Giles died on May 25, 1987 in Toledo.
