McIntosh describes the following aspects of slavery as he observed them in Wilcox County, Alabama: dwellings and possessions; clothing and food; occupations and typical workdays; money earned by slaves for their own use; family life; entertainment; education; religion and morality; visitation privileges and runaways; relationships between masters and slaves; emancipation; free African Americans; and whites who did not own slaves.
