Description
In the message Wallace gives a brief overview of the civil rights demonstrations in Birmingham, Alabama, blaming "outside agitators" for the "internal strife and turmoil": "In my best judgment subversive elements have been at work in that city and many of our people suspect that these elements have been responsible for many of the acts of violence which have occurred." The governor asks the congressmen to have the House Un-American Activities Committee conduct an investigation of the situation.
