American Public Welfare Association

Description

This folder contains materials created/collected by the American Public Welfare Association. A group of public welfare officials attending the 1929 National Conference of Social Work (NCSW) in San Francisco agreed there was a need for an independent professional organization of their own. The American Association of Public Welfare Officials, organized June 12, 1930, in Boston, was the result. One of APWA's earliest activities was promoting passage of the Social Security legislation in 1935. APWA faithfully monitored Congressional action on the amendments of the 1950s and 1960s. Among APWA's other legislative interests have been aging, medical care, and Aid to Dependent Children. This folder contains materials collected by the American Public Welfare Association in reference to the Southern Christian Leadership Conference's Poor People's Campaign. The Poor People's Campaign, also known as the Poor People's March on Washington, was a march organized by Martin Luther King, Jr. to bring attention to the economic issues facing people across the United States.
