The Armstrong Association was founded in 1907 by John Thompson Emlen, a Germantown Quaker, and Alex Manly a journalist for Wilmington's Daily Record and member of the Afro-American Newspaper Council. Named after General Samuel T. Armstrong, founder of Hampton Institute, the Armstrong Association was the precursor to what became the Urban League in 1955.
