Dr. Daniel Collins was born January 11, 1916, in Darlington, South Carolina. Dr. Collins went to high school in Darlington, then to Paine College in Augusta, Georgia, where he excelled in chemistry and mathematics. He later enrolled in the dental school in Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee. From 1942 to 1960 Dr. Collins worked in research and practiced at the University of California, San Francisco, before going into private practice. He lived in San Francisco with his wife, DeReath, and children before moving to Mill Valley in 1952. In this oral history, Dr. Collins discusses the unique aspects of Mill Valley that brought him and his family to the town, as well as facing racial prejudice amid the residents and real estate community. He also shares his thoughts on testing and admission biases in higher education. The Collins' had four children: Ed "Chip" Collins, Daniel Collins, Charles "Chuck" Collins, and Craig Collins. Dr. Collins died at 91 on Sept. 13, 2007, having achieved a myriad of awards, honorary titles, and political appointments.
