Holograph, signed.Title devised by cataloger.Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) manuscript composed in black ink on white, lined paper with an embossed oval logo containing the word "Hope" in the head- spine corner of the first page. Under the salutation, the number "98" is written in pencil.C.A. Stackpole writes to William Lloyd Garrison agreeing that his "position with regard to Mr. Lincoln is wholly tenable, and will secure the approval of intelligent and candid persons the world over." Stackpole writes that some aspects of the Administration's conduct are "liable to severe criticism" but "the indiscriminate censure of Mr. [Wendell] Phillips is without excuse." Stackpole calls Garrison's position "the result of a comprehensive, candid, common sense view of the whole matter ... and true to the black man and the cause of human rights."
