Description
Fifth Avenue High School, one of the first high school buildings in Pittsburgh, was first opened in 1895 on the site of an old city market. Until its construction, students from the Pittsburgh neighborhoods of Squirrel Hill, East Liberty, Lawrenceville, South Side, and the West End, all attended Pittsburgh's Central High School. The western end of the first floor at the new school was occupied by the executive offices of the Board of Education, the library was the meeting room of the Central Board of Education, and the eastern end of the first floor was used as a training school for new teachers. In 1926 an annex containing an auditorium, two gymnasiums, and a swimming pool was constructed. The addition was connected to the building by a bridge spanning Watson Street. Fifth Avenue High School closed in 1976.
