Scott, Lorenzo

Description

Sculpture by Lorenzo Scott.A pivotal moment in Lorenzo Scott's artistic career occurred in 1968 when he traveled to New York and was inspired by the work of both local sidewalk artists and the Renaissance and Baroque religious paintings on display at the Metropolitan Museum. Afterwards, he studied similar works on exhibit at the High Museum in Atlanta, Georgia. Scott taught himself oil paint glazing technique and reproduced Old Master composition and iconography; he also imitated the frames of Old Master works by using gold paint and auto body compound to give his works a gilded relief finish. Although he is self-taught, Scott is very knowledgeable about academic art, thanks to widely available reproductions, media coverage and his many museum visits.Gift of Dr. James Farmer to the Tubman African American Museum.
