Description
Photograph of students gathered outside Lumpkin Academy in Oglethorpe, Georgia, pictured in the late 1920s. The two-story wooden structure is in poor condition. The windows are covered with wooden planks, and the clapboard siding is in great disrepair. One of the first schools for African Americans in the state, the institution was founded by Horace Lumpkin in 1886 and operated until 1930, when the school building collapsed.
