Lena Horne (1917 – 2010) singer, actress, civil rights activist and dancer began performing at age 16 at Harlem’s Cotton Club which launched her career. As her career matured, Horne won many “firsts” including becoming the first African American performer to sign a long-term contract with a major Hollywood film studio—MGM Studios.
