Adam Clayton Powell Jr. , organizer of the 1966 National Black Power Conference, speaks at a NAACP civil rights rally in Atlantic City, New Jersey on August 23, 1964. Powell received his B.A. from Colgate University and earned a MA in religious education from Columbia University. In 1937 he succeeded his father as pastor of Abyssinian Baptist in Harlem. In 1941 he was elected to the New York City Council. In 1945 he became the first Black Congressman from New York to serve in the United States House of Representatives. He held the position until 1971. He was an advocate for the independence of African and Asian nations, attending the 1955 Bandung Conference in Indonesia. He also made speeches on the House Floor that celebrated the anniversaries of the independence of nations such as Ghana, Indonesia, and Sierra Leone. In 1961 became the chair of the House Committee on Education and Labor.
