Description

This is a group photograph of a meeting of Masons dressed in blackface. It also includes one person in women's clothing, another in Scottish Highlands dress and another dressed as an English lord. Minstrel shows were a phenomenon that began in the United States in the 1830s and actually continued in one form or another into the 20th century. The first talking picture, "The Jazz Singer," shown in 1927, featured Al Jolson in blackface. The photograph is labeled "Sun Flower Bells" with the subtitle Masonic Minstrels.
