Description

This folder contains materials collected by/about Russel N. Service. Service began his YMCA career in Buffalo, New York, at the Michigan Avenue YMCA, where he served from 1947 to 1959 as executive secretary. When he left that Y, which functioned as a center for the African American community of Buffalo, he transferred to the Bedford branch of the YMCA of Greater New York. He remained there until 1964, when he was appointed city program director and in 1968, became associate vice president for urban affairs. Russell Service left YMCA work in 1973, entering Long Island politics and becoming the first African American elected to public office in Nassau County. This folder specifically contains materials related to the Federation of Concerned Associations (FOCA), formed in 1967. FOCA was made up of black and white executives from more than a dozen northeastern inner city YMCAs in an effort to deal with the problems of the urban core in large cities served by these YMCAs. In particular, FOCA was formed to address the gap between professed policy and practice, the lack of urgency about the problems of the inner cities, and the inadequate involvement of black YMCA professionals and laypeople in developing solutions. Russell Service served on the Executive Committee of the organization and was also acting chairman and chairman.
